Hi Owen,

I'm not sure because I don't run xampp, but my guess is that it's something to do with MySQL, as they both use this database. Maybe the MythTV install changed some configuration or libraries? Try looking in the xampp logs for any database errors. May just be a permissions thing or something.

Sorry I can't be of more help,
Garry.

I am using xampp to run a file sharing server on the computer that I just installed mythtv on. I am now unable to share files. How am I able to use mythtv on the same computer but without the online sharing of mythtv?

Hi Fraser,

Thanks for that. I upgraded to 10.04 at the weekend and had a few issues with the nVidia drivers for my 6200 card. An old nVidia package wouldn't uninstall because the actual module .ko file was missing! In the end I had to touch the file to create it and then the package uninstalled fine and the new nvidia-current package loaded OK.

Worked out what the problem was with rebuild. My Aopen i855 Mobo with Pentium M chip is perfect for MythTV but has onboard Intel 855 graphics. 10.04 and Intel 855 are a well documented disaster even for bearded sandalled types. Even if I managed to get around that, I'd then need to face the Nvidia challenges (blacklisting Nouveau etc... ) which makes a 10.04 install look near impossible given my weekday 11-12pm sys admin slot !

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1472282

Symptoms/Error codes for anyone googling for answers were "failed to load Nvidia kernel" when starting X, Black screen, and when trying 10.04 clean install, no means to exit to terminal.

So in short, if you've got 855 onboard graphics, leave 10.04 well alone. Am now rebuilding to 9.10 & will disable all upgrades for a year or so.....

I hope at least a few people read this & save themselves some late nights pondering their sanity in starting on the MythTV pilgrimage.....

Still on 9.10 on my Mythbox, although I did have a few problems with the nVidia drivers last time I upgraded. all I had to do was:

sudo aptitude install linux-headers-$(uname -r)
sudo aptitude reinstall nvidia-185-kernel-source

...to install the 185 version and it worked fine. Not sure if this helps with 10.04. I'll let you know when I take the plunge. My box is in current use by the family, so I don't usually get round to upgrading it until a few months after each release.

Upgraded to 10.04 shortly after it came out & all worked fine with no tweaking whatsoever. Recently had disk overheating issue that trashed the box & have had no end of trouble getting NVidia drivers that work reliably (5200 & 6200). When I do get the drivers properly installed and working it breaks something else. There's lots of advice about blacklisting Nouveau & other tweaks, but no "official" guidance from Mythbuntu about how other users have reached a stable system. Nvidia is the choice of many/most MythTV users & many of us need hand-holding at times. Have you plunged into 10.04 yet & do you have any tips ?
Should I have stuck with 9.1 ?

I assume you are doing this because you do not have direct access to your mythbackend machine. Probably the best way to configure this would be to use VNC instead of SSH. Enable Remote Desktop in System->Preferences on the backend and then use vncviewer on the client to bring up the screens. Then you will be able to run mythtv-setup with no problems.

MythTV is so awesome, but I still can't get it going. The problem is running mythtv-setup over SSH. I get a lot of errors and usually a blank screen. Before it stopped at a theme file, but now it stops at
extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display "localhost:10.0".
which the internet tells me is a common problem. What did you do to get mythtv-setup to show properly?

Hi Gary,

Great article. Say, is it possible to connect a Digital set-top box to the RCA of a normal TV tuner card(not DVB-T) and get it working with mythtv?
